Laurids Gallée, the Austrian designer based in Rotterdam, creates objects that blur the boundaries between sculpture, furniture, and architecture. Born in 1989 into a family of artists, he briefly studied anthropology before discovering his true path at the Design Academy Eindhoven, graduating in 2015. After honing his craft through hands-on production work, he established his studio in 2017, where material experimentation drives his practice. Gallée is particularly renowned for his masterful use of resin, which he casts, colours, cuts, and sculpts to control light in captivating ways.

His latest work, System 01, exemplifies this approach. Measuring an imposing 365 x 94 x 210 cm and limited to an edition of three plus one artist’s proof, the piece hangs as a series of fused, glowing forms. Organic curves meet architectural lines, emitting a soft amber light that shifts subtly with every viewpoint. Produced in collaboration with Objects with Narratives, it forms part of his solo exhibition “Lima Charlie” and feels both ancient and futuristic, evoking satellite dishes, antenna masts, and celestial bodies.

Gallée’s process begins in digital space and virtual reality before moving into physical resin casting. He meticulously refines how light travels through the material, playing with refraction, opacity, and colour depth. The result is never static. Move around System 01 and the sculpture reveals new dimensions, as if alive with quiet energy. This piece continues his exploration of light as both material and narrative, creating objects that invite contemplation while asserting a bold physical presence. In Gallée’s hands, lighting transcends function to become sculptural poetry that redefines how we experience space and illumination.
