Gareth Munro Captures the True Spirit of South African Landscapes

Justin Martin

Gareth Munro was born in Cape Town in 1999, but his early years were defined by the shifting scenery of the South African coast. Alongside his family, he moved from the Mother City to Hermanus, spent time in East London, and ultimately settled in Gqeberha, where he continues to live and create today. Coming from the deeply creative Munro family line, picking up a pencil felt completely natural, and he spent much of his childhood drawing. Yet, the transition to acrylics did not happen until he turned eighteen. It was a spontaneous decision that unlocked a massive hidden talent, propelling him into a full-time art career by 2018.

When asked if his artistic path was predetermined, Gareth reflects on his roots. "Growing up in the Munro family, I spent a lot of time drawing and watched my uncle paint, which inspired me to keep creating," he notes. "I honestly did not think I could do it at first, but putting in the hours showed me that I have what it takes to be a full-time artist". He views his family heritage as an absolute gift, adding, "It is a true privilege to run in a family of artists and make a living from my passion, so I definitely feel like this was the plan for my life".

What sets Gareth apart is his hyper-realistic focus on the tiny details that bring a scene to life. He easily loses himself in the rhythm of nature, deeply inspired by the vastness of the Western Cape and the ancient, rolling plains of the Karoo. This immense patience can easily mirror an obsession. "I can easily spend hours painting a single part of a canvas, like a cluster of stones or blades of grass," Gareth admits. "I will start working and look up to realize that four hours have passed because I completely lose track of time". Still, this deep dive into detail serves a greater purpose. "Ultimately, I think that dedication helps people see just how passionate I am about my work".

Gareth believes that traveling through the local landscape is vital for understanding light and form. Witnessing the grand scale of the country allows him to accurately map out shadows and intricate elements, which has drastically elevated his fine art style. His artistic eye relies on this firsthand connection to the environment. "For me, it is essential to observe nature closely before I even start painting," he explains. "Observing the world firsthand gives me the foundation I need to bring these landscapes to life on canvas".

Through his international and local gallery exhibitions, his ultimate goal remains grounded in connection. He wants to offer viewers a window into the raw majesty of South Africa. "My mission is simply to show people what inspires me as a person," Gareth says. "When people look at my art, I want to give them an opportunity to step into that space and feel as though they are standing right there in the actual scene". Through thousands of precise brushstrokes and a deep love for the country, he accomplishes exactly that.
